Natural approaches to health, wellness

LAPEER COUNTY — Health and wellness are hot topics these days, and many people are choosing to take the matter of their own well-being into their own hands, at least as much as they can.

As stress levels are on the rise, people are looking for ways to reduce their tension, and improve their physical health. Concerns about the over-prescription and addictive qualities of pain medication has sent those with chronic pain in search of other remedies to improve their quality of life in a gentler, healthier way. Questions about the sourcing and safety of our foods and medicines are prompting some to grow their own food and create natural remedies, or purchase locally grown and made products.

In today’s Insight section, we will feature some local people who are doing all those things to incorporate a more holistic approach to well-being into their lives and for others. Massage expert Sandy Fritz discusses the evolution of massage from a new-age approach to an evidence based and medically accepted form of therapy which is backed by science.

Gina Delisi and Carolyn Leduc-Krehel serve as examples of local people who use herbs and foraged plants to not only create delicious and healing meals, but also health and beauty products.

Long-time meditation student-turned-teacher Roy Sexton shows how he not only found his inner peace after serving during the Vietnam war, but also how he turned the crumbling and seemingly doomed Henley Center in Lapeer into a haven of serenity known as the Meditation Self-Healing Center.

Heather Easton and Tammy Cutcher are two women who have made strides in their personal health and well-being through the use of essential oils, both now running businesses that blossomed from the passion that took root once they saw the benefits oils had for them.

And Rebekah Niman is a local woman who has built a large and successful business serving people who want to take control of their own health, naturally.

Across the county, there are likely hundreds of others for whom natural approaches to health and wellness are making a difference and empowering them to take responsibility for their well-being and that of their family.

Perhaps today’s Insight section will inspire others to try something new for their own mind, body and spirit.
