Man in custody following shooting death of Lapeer High School studentFree Access



METAMORA TWP. — A 19-year-old man is in custody following an early morning shooting death today of a Lapeer High School senior. Deceased from a gunshot wound to his torso region is Kaden James Ryan, 18, of Lapeer.

Metamora Twp. Police Dept. Officer Cameron Plowman responded to a report of an accidental shooting at 12:01 a.m. at 3660 S. Lapeer Rd., Lot 150, in the Ideal Villa Mobile Home Park. Upon arrival, Plowman performed lifesaving measures on Ryan.

He was transported by Lapeer County EMS to McLaren Lapeer Region where he was pronounced deceased by emergency room physicians.

Metamora Twp. Police Dept. Chief David Mallet in a press statement said after an initial investigation, officers took a 19-year-old man into custody on charges to be determined by the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Office. There are no other threats to the community.

A call to the Prosecutor’s Office has not been returned as of this posting.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division were called to the location to process the scene for evidence. Several pieces of evidence were obtained and are being processed. Mallet indicated the investigation continues and more information will be released at a later time.

Lapeer Community Schools issued the following statement: “This morning, the District was made aware of the tragic death of one of our students, Kaden Ryan, a senior at Lapeer High School. We do not have any further details at this time. Counselors and social workers are on site at LHS to support students and staff during this difficult time. On behalf of the District, we express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kaden.”

In addition to the Metamora Twp. Police Dept. and Michigan State Police, other agencies that responded to the shooting included the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept., Dryden Twp. Police, and the Metamora Twp. Fire Dept.

Name of the man in custody and charges will be released after arraignment. The County Press will continue to follow this developing story.
