Hadley Lions set to choose poster winner over dinner

HADLEY — Diners at the Hadley Lion’s Club monthly spaghetti dinner will get more than a plate of pasta Thursday (Nov. 15) night.

Visitors tomorrow will also get a chance to vote on the district winner for the Lions’ annual Peace Poster Contest.

Deb Kaighen, secretary of the Hadley Lions and chairman of the district Peace Poster Contest, expects to get 15 entries from the 44 clubs that comprise District 11-D2 which stretches from Lapeer and St. Clair counties north to Port Austin. The winner will take home a $300 prize from the district, and if they win an international contest they could win $5,000.

Last year’s district winner was Anna Elkafarnah from Almont Middle School. The contest is open to all school children 11 to 13 years old. This year’s theme is “Kindness Matters,” which Keighen said is especially appropriate with the current focus on anti-bullying measures.

Kaighen said every diner who comes to Thursday’s spaghetti dinner at the Old Township Hall at 3551 Hadley Rd. in downtown Hadley will be given a ticket to drop in a can in front of their favorite poster to be on display during the event. The winner, she said, will be the poster with earns the most tickets.

Kaighen said in the three years she’s chaired the contest, they’ve averaged 15 entries. She said she’d like to see more next year.

The Hadley Lions meet at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at the Old Township Hall in Hadley. They are back at the hall for their spaghetti dinner fund raiser from 5-8 p.m. the third Thursday of the month.

Tickets at the door are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $3 for children 6 to 12 years old.
