Ed-Tech to host job fair with 60 employers

ATTICA TWP. — Next month, the Lapeer Education and Technology Center (Ed-Tech) on Lake Pleasant Road in Attica Township will be a one-stop shop for anyone looking for a career jumpstart.

The school is set to host its second annual Ed-Tech Career Fair on April 20, and the public’s welcome from 2-4 p.m.

According to Ed-Tech Assistant Principal Dawn Cowhy, the event will feature roughly 60 representatives from area employers ready to talk to all comers about job opportunities available in their businesses. There’s no cost to attend.

The public session will follow a special chance from noon to 2 p.m. set aside for Ed-Tech seniors to chat with the attending employers, an opportunity that the students have been preparing for all year.

Enrolled in Ed-Tech’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, the seniors develop portfolios of what they’ve accomplished throughout the school year and in some cases have already earned trade certifications — an aspect of the CTE programs that Cowhy said makes the students ready to start making those professional connections. “It’s a great opportunity to give a handshake, look people in the eye and speak directly to (a potential employer),” she said, skills that Ed-Tech students hone in class. “This is a step up from that, we’re trying to bridge that gap between (learning those skills in) the classroom and real-world application.”

Attending employers represent a variety of industries said Cowhy, from manufacturing to retail, health sciences to education, trades and everything in-between. It’s the second go-around for the event, after the inaugural iteration proved to be successful. It’s recommended that those who plan to visit during the public session come prepared with resumes and professional dress.

Employers and visitors to last year’s event were asked to complete an exit survey detailing their experiences, and Cowhy said the results were encouraging. “Everyone found it really valuable, everyone really seemed to think it was beneficial,” she said.

Ed-Tech is located at 690 N. Lake Pleasant Rd. in Attica Township.
