LAPEER — A new type of event is headed to Lapeer.
Nonprofit community organization Lapeer PRIDE, along with Spiral – A Space of Welcome Community of Christ, is organizing a Drag Queen Storytime at 2062 Oregon Rd. in Lapeer on Saturday.
The Storytime will be hosted by JonBenet and will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26. All ages are welcome to listen to stories.
A “Drag Queen Storytime,” said Lisa Meyer, is what it sounds like — “basically, a family story hour where a drag queen comes in and reads the stories.” Meyer, a pastor at Spiral, is a co-organizer of the event, and said similar drag queen story hour events, as a concept, have really “taken off” in cities around the country.
Meyer said Saturday’s Drag Queen Storytime is a “cool opportunity for kids and young people to see persons reaching beyond the gender binary” in a family appropriate setting. “Most drag events happen in nightclubs and bars, and while that is fine for adults, it is important for kids and teens to see gender expression normalized as well,” said Meyer.
JonBenet, who will also be presenting a drag show later that evening at Flanagan’s Pub in downtown Lapeer, will be the featured reader for Storytime.
