Hadley Twp. approves budget, considers road repaving

HADLEY TWP. — Hadley Township trustees approved their general and fire budgets Tuesday evening and reappointed Kurt Nass as the township’s fire chief for another year.

Township Treasurer Chris Tippen said the township expects to take delivery of a new pumper truck in a couple of weeks, just in time for Hadley’s Fourth of July parade. He said the $591,000 vehicle will all but wipe out the Hadley Township Fire Dept.’s fund balance. But he said, the fire department will take in $202,000 in revenue for the 2019-20 fiscal year, while spending $141,000 on operations.

Noting the township prefers to pay cash for its fire trucks, Tippen said the department will start rebuilding its fund balance for the next fire truck replacement.

The township, said Tippen, approved a $610,600 general fund budget for the coming fiscal year.

He said trustees have been “kicking around” the idea of using its general fund balance to repave Herd Road from the entrance to Metamora-Hadley State Recreation Area south to Brocker Road since their budget hearing in May. Tippen noted the Lapeer County Road Commission is planning to repave the road from Pratt Road south to the Park entrance.

The township’s portion of the twomile project, Tippen said, is estimated at close to $600,000. “That’s a pretty big hit,” he said, noting township trustees approved $500,000 in road work last year. Tippen said township trustees will likely make a decision at their July meeting.

Lapeer County Road Commission County Highway Engineer Destain Gingell said the commission is planning to do an overlay on the two-mile stretch of road but won’t schedule a start date until the township makes a decision. He noted the commission has until the end of October to complete the project.

Trustees approved a fireworks permit for Whispering Oaks Nudist Resort on Baldwin Road for the Fourth of July weekend.
