Lapeer softball falls at Michigan Stars tourney

GRAND BLANC — The Lightning were handed a pair of losses at the Michigan Stars tournament in Grand Blanc on Sunday. Lapeer fell 14-7 against Garden City and 6-5 against Marysville.

Garden City took a 4-2 lead in the first inning and put Lapeer in a hole with eight runs in the second and two in the third. Lapeer added five in the fourth. Paige Erla and Bri Opalewski were both 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI each. Ellie Greene and Morgan Coulter added a hit each.

Lapeer held a 5-0 lead after two innings against Marysville, but Marysville came from behind with three runs in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh to take the win

Opalewski was 3-for-4 hitting and Meredith Morell was 2-for-4. Leah Ruddock, Leah Ridenour and Morgan Coulter had a hit each. Opalewski also took the loss on the mound, striking out eight batters and allowing 12 hits.

Lapeer, 2-7, was at Midland Dow on Tuesday and will host Davison on Thursday. — K.R.

ALMONT

The Lady Raiders finished with a 1-2 record at the Michigan Stars Tournament at Grand Blanc on Saturday. Almont won 6-3 over Pinconning in its first game but then fell 16-6 to Waterford Kettering and 14-3 to Port Huron Northern to end its day.

In the first game, Almont trailed 3-0 after the first two innings, but scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win. Grace Johnson led the team with two hits and one RBI, while Hannah Feys and Samantha Dyer added two hits apiece. Laken Campbell and Makayla Gammon had one hit with two RBI each and Sarah Hall and Olivia Malcolm both added a hit. Malcolm earned the win in the circle, pitching seven innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

Against Waterford Kettering, Almont fell behind 5-0 after the first two innings. The Lady Raiders were outscored 5-4 in the third inning before cutting the deficit with a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning. Kettering closed out the win with five runs in the fifth inning.

Hall and Malcolm had two hits and one RBI each. Campbell finished with one hit and three RBI and Johnson, Gammon, Rachael Schapman and Samantha Knittel added one hit each. Malcolm pitched 3-2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Emily Klassa pitched 1-1/3 innings with no strikeouts and six walks.

In their final game against Port Huron Northern, the Lady Raiders were held scoreless until the fifth inning, where they scored all three of their runs. Northern added two runs in the first inning and six in both the second and fourth innings. Johnson and Malcolm had one hit and one RBI apiece to lead the offense. Hannah Landerschier and Hall also added one hit each. Malcolm pitched two innings, allowing nine hits with no strikeouts. Klassa pitched three innings, allowing five hits but picking up one strikeout.

LAKEVILLE

The Lady Falcons swept Montrose, winning 12-2 and 12-1 Monday.

LakeVille fell behind 1-0 early in the opener, but the Lady Falcons offensive erupted for four runs in the third inning, a run in the fourth and seven in the fifth. Isabelle Littleton was in the circle for LakeVille, allowing five hits and five strikeouts against 22 batters. Kiya Parsons, Brie Macsuga, Madison McGinn and Zoe Traver led the offense, according to LakeVille coach Jason Macsuga.

The momentum was carried into the nightcap, as the Lady Falcons scored six runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth. Madison Macsuga and Makayla Gerow each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Gerow was also in the circle, striking out five and allowing three hits against 21 batters. — J.O.

MAYVILLE

The Lady Cats swept Carsonville-Port Sanilac on Monday, winning 18-3 and 20-3.

Carly Hoag pitched the opener, lasting three innings with eight strikeouts. Madison Garrison won the nightcap, striking out three over three innings.

Alexis Rutter led Mayville’s offense, collecting three hits, four RBI, seven runs and five walks throughout the doubleheader. Karli Hilts had eight runs and seven walks, while Grace Middleton had one hit, four RBI, two runs and four walks.

Mayville was also at Kingston on Tuesday after press deadlines. — J.O.

NORTH BRANCH

The Lady Broncos were slated to face Croswell-Lexington on Friday, but the game was canceled due to weather. North Branch was at Algonac on Tuesday and will travel to Almont today. — K.R.
