LANSING — State Rep. Gary Howell has introduced legislation that would boost conservation efforts to help restore Michigan’s pheasant population.

“Programs like this one will facilitate the revitalization of Michigan wildlife. This initiative has the potential to improve small game hunting opportunities, increase wildlife populations, encourage youth hunting and help Michigan’s economy,” said Howell of Deerfield Township.

House Bill 4313 would create a stamp for bird hunters’ licenses specifically for pheasant hunting. Fees collected from stamp sales would go into a fund dedicated to enhancing pheasant hunting opportunities and improving pheasant habitat.

Howell noted that hunting and fishing play an important role in the overall protection of Michigan’s natural resources. Last year, hunting and fishing license sales paid for $83.5 million of game and fish protection activity carried out by the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR).

“Pheasant hunting is an excellent entry-level opportunity for young people just getting into hunting,” Howell said. “Sharing this hunting heritage with the next generation plays an important role in future conservation and helps pass on a love of the outdoors.”

In proposing HB 4313, Howell has been working with the volunteers of the Michigan Pheasant Hunting Initiative and the members of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. Ken Dalton of Arcadia Township has been leading the effort for expanded pheasant hunting opportunities.
