Church group to present free food distribution Feb. 26

ATTICA TWP. — Lapeer Interfaith Community Association (LICA) Soup Kitchens and Michigan Christian Youth Camp (MCYC) have teamed up to host a mobile food distribution event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 26.

Susan Bishop, the LICA coordinator, said they got a call from the Foodbank of Eastern Michigan wanting to know if they were willing to hold a mobile food distribution. The Flint-based foodbank which services 22 counties, offered to send a semi-truck loaded with 22 pallets of food.

“That’s roughly enough to feed 400 households,” said Bishop. LICA is a group of five Lapeer and Imlay City-area churches that provide hot meals on a weekly basis.

Bishop said none of them had a space that could hold 22 pallets of food during the week.

That’s when they turned to MCYC. This time of year, said Bishop, the camp is running weekend programs.

The Foodbank of Eastern Michigan will bring a truck load of food and LICA volunteers will unload and distribute it.

The distribution will be free and open to the public. She said they are recruiting area service agencies like Love INC to be on hand to distribute their information.

MCYC is located at 820 N. Lake George Rd., Attica Twp.
