Lapeer boys end five-game skid with win over Flint

LAPEER — The Lapeer boys’ basketball team destroyed Flint 73-53 on Thursday night, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Lapeer kept the Jaguars at bay for most of the first half, outscoring Flint 20-12 in the first quarter and 19-13 in the second. The Lightning went on a 19-9 run in the third to take a 58-34 lead into the final frame. The Jags outscored Lapeer in the fourth 19-15.

Caleb Albrecht led Lapeer with 22 points. Carson Butterfield chipped in with 11.

On Wednesday night, the Lightning lost to Oxford 66-27 at home. The game, originally slated for Tuesday, was rescheduled to Wednesday due to weather.

Lapeer fell into an 18-5 hole in the first quarter that ballooned into a 36-14 disadvantage by halftime. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter before Oxford put the nail in the coffin with a 22-5 fourth-quarter run.

Colton Meister led the Lightning in scoring with eight points.

Lapeer, 5-5 in the SVL and 7-10 overall, was off over the weekend and will be at Holly, 5-10, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. — J.O.

ALMONT

The Raiders looked unstoppable all night during an 83-41 win over Algonac on the road Thursday.

Almont opened the game with an 18-7 run in the first quarter and extended its lead with a 20-10 advantage in the second frame. The Raiders outscored Algonac 21-15 in the third quarter and ended the game with a 24-9 advantage to secure the big win.

Austin Watt scored 18 points with three assists to lead Almont. Colby Schapman netted 11 points with three rebounds, Noah Houvener added eight points and Ignacio Aguirre, Gabe Bourdeau and Cameron Asaro added seven points apiece. Mike Rinke and Atte Vouristo finished with four points apiece, Rafael Farias added two points and Darren Herman chipped in one.

Almont, 12-5, was at Richmond Friday after we went to press. — A.V.

DRYDEN

The Cardinals picked up a 47-31 win over Armada on the road Wednesday. The game was originally slated for Tuesday, but was postponed due to weather.

Dryden jumped out to an early lead with a 9-2 scoring advantage in the first quarter, but Armada evened the score with a 13-6 run in the second frame to tie the game at 15-15 at the half. In the second half, the Cardinals went on runs of 16-7 in the third quarter and 16-8 in the fourth to put the game away.

“That was the best all-around team game that we have played all season,” said Dryden coach John DelCampo. “I’m very proud of our team.”

Jack Kaplan scored 18 points with five steals and four assists to lead Dryden, while Ronny Hudson chipped in with 11 points. Brady Czape finished with eight points and three rebounds, Nathan Schenkel scored five with four boards, Coulter Waite finished with three points and Rylan Rudd scored two.

IMLAY CITY

Parker Lewis netted 17 points to help the Spartans secure a 77-49 win at Marlette Thursday.

Imlay City led 24-18 after the first quarter and outscored Marlette 18-16 in the second for a 42-34 lead at the half. After the break, the Spartans secured the win with runs of 14-7 and 21-8 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Hunter Medrano added 15 points for the Spartans, Mitch Allen scored 13 and Lonnie Wolford finished with 10. Logan Wilson scored eight, Raymond Liu seven, Wei Lin Liu three and Manny Ortiz chipped in with two.

Imlay City, 8-10, visited Armada Friday after we went to press. — A.V.

LAKEVILLE

The Falcons were handed a 42-29 loss against New Lothrop on Wednesday in what LakeVille coach Mike Hebekeuser called a “defensive battle.”

New Lothrop took a slight 7-3 lead in the first quarter and both teams scored nine points in the second for New Lothrop to lead 16-12 at halftime. LakeVille began to fall further behind in the third as New Lothrop outscored the Falcons 16-5 to extend its lead to 32-17. The Falcons then took the fourth with a 12-10 run, but it was too little, too late.

“Both teams struggled to score in the first half,” Hebekeuser added. “New Lothrop won the third quarter by 11 points and that was the difference in the game.”

Kohl Jobson led with eight points. Henry Deschner and Mason Leland had six each.

LakeVille, 1-17, hosts Montrose on Thursday. — K.R.

MAYVILLE

The Wildcats pulled off the onepoint 45-44 win over Genesee Thursday in a makeup game from Tuesday.

Genesee led 16-11 after the first quarter and 25-21 at the half. Both teams scored nine points in the third and Mayville had more gas in the tank in the fourth outscoring Genesee 15-10.

Jeffrey Frost led Mayville with 15 points and Carter Harmon had eight. — L.P.

NORTH BRANCH

The Broncos’ Snowcoming was spoiled by Yale, which beat North Branch 61-52 Thursday.

“We had are worst rebounding performance of the year,” said North Branch coach Mike Snoblen. “Yale crashed the boards hard and we didn’t box out at all. Scoring only sixs points in the fourth quarter didn’t help at all. We aren’t going to beat anybody with that kinda scoring.”

North Branch was up on Yale by a mere point, 15-14 after the opening quarter, but Yale took over the lead 30-28 at the break. The score was knotted at 46-46 after the third quarter, but Yale outscored North Branch 14-6 in the fourth.

Riley Bugg scored 25 points, Gerrid Rutledge had 11 and Evan Schapman six.

The loss drops North Branch to 12-7 overall, 7-6 BWAC. — L.P.
