SAGINAW — Illnesses put the Lapeer swim and dive team in a shorthanded mode against Saginaw Heritage Friday and despite the 137- 48 loss, Lapeer had a lot of great accomplishments. Key among those was Carter Cerny shattering the school record in 1-meter diving. Dylan Fuchs also set a new personal-best mark in diving, both in the six-dive category.

Coach Linda Wagner was pleased with her team’s efforts.

“It was an exciting meet with many close races and high anticipation, to see just who would hit that touch pad first,” said Wagner. “Our 200 medley relay team of Reece Fisher, Dylan Fuchs, Calvin Dion and Grant Masterson out-touched Heritage by only .29 to clinch first place. Masterson struck again in the 50 freestyle with an outstanding swim, crushing Heritage’s hopes of taking first, second and third, as he out-touched Heritage by .27 and again clinched a first-place finish for our team. Calvin Dion swam hard in his favorite event, 100 butterfly, and was just out-touched by Heritage by .05 and received third place. These were just a few of the nail-biting races.”

“The 1-meter dive event was just as exciting,” explained Wagner. “With Keegan White and Ethan Rutledge both fighting a bad stomach bug, we only had Carter Cerny and Dylan Fuchs diving at this meet. Heritage also had two divers. Our dive team definitely rose to the challenge with Cerny and Fuchs finishing in second and third place. Both of them achieved new PB’s with Cerny breaking his previous sixdive school record for the second time this season! They continue to reach new heights with tighter, cleaner and more challenging dives. Way to go Dive Team!”

Wagner also noted that despite several kids missing due to illness, Lapeer achieved 18 individual personal-best marks and 12 relay split PB times for an overall improvement of 40.5 percent.

“I continue to be impressed by the team’s improvement, drive and determination,” said Wagner.

Lapeer’s podium finishers were Tom Tunison (4th – 200 Free); Calvin Dion (4th – 200 IM and 3rd 100 Fly); Grant Masterson (1st – 50 Free and 4th – 100 Free); Carter Cerny (2nd – 1 Meter Diving); Christian Miller (4th – 500 Free); Reece Fisher (100 Back); and Dylan Fuchs (4th – 100 Breast).

Lapeer was first in the 200 medley relay with Fisher, Fuchs, Dion and Masterson in the lane. Masterson won the 50 free and Dion was third in butterfly. Masterson, Fuchs, Dion and Fisher were third in the 200 free relay, and Jacob Whitney, Kristen Kautz, Evan Angus and Cerney were third in the 400 free relay.
