Lapeer grapplers compete at rugged Valley meet

MIDLAND — The Lapeer wrestling team competed at the Saginaw Valley League Individual Tournament on Saturday at Midland Dow. At 112 lbs., Danielle Renshaw lost by fall in 0:38 to Mt. Pleasant and was then pinned by Bay City Central in 2:02. Gage Houghtaling opened with a win at 119, 13-2, over Saginaw Arthur Hill and then dropped a 5-2 decision to Mt. Pleasant. He won by fall in 2:03 over Midland and then claimed third place with a 7-2 win over Bay City John Glenn.

Ashton Light won by fall in 3:38 over Bay City Western at 125 and was then pinned by Grand Blanc in 1:08. Light then won by fall in 2:47 over Arthur Hill and 3:17 over Mt. Pleasant before falling 11-5 to Carman-Ainsworth in the third-place match.

At 130, Liam Mingee lost by fall in 1:40 to Central and was then pinned in 1:26 by Saginaw Heritage. Robert Martin won 3-1 over Midland at 135 and was pinned in 0:41 by Grand Blanc. He bounced back with a 12-4 major decision victory over Mt. Pleasant and took a 6-1 decision over Heritage to take home the third-place medal.

Elijah Chaffin won his first match by fall in 1:51 over Grand Blanc at 145 and then lost 6-2 to Davison. He then took a 2-1 win over Midland Dow and then laid claim to third place with a win by fall over Grand Blanc in 2:20.

At 171, Nicholas Young opened with a win by fall in 0:20 over John Glenn and was then topped, 10-5, by Midland. He pinned Flint Powers Catholic in 0:25 and then won a 7-0 decision over Arthur Hill. He lost 6-2 to Dow and then lost in the third-place match to Carman-Ainsworth. — B.P.

ALMONT

The Raiders took fifth at the 46th annual Jim Peltier Classic with 147. Out of 16 teams, Croswell-Lexington was first with 285, Utica Ford was second with 232, Trenton was third with 191 and Yale was fourth with 169.

Austin Battani took first at 189 lbs. after opening with a win by forfeit over Warren Lincoln’s Zaviere Wilson and then pinned St. Clair’s Nate Luther and Petoskey’s Noah VanderWall. In the first-place match, Battani pinned Port Huron’s Cody Borntrager to take first place.

At 103, Dallas Stanton finished third after pinning his first two opponents, Cros-Lex’s Jason Krouse and Trenton’s William Lugo, but then lost a 9-0 major decision against Yale’s Seth Woolman. In the third-place match, Stanton won a 13-1 major decision over Troy’s Justin Surrett.

Gavin Dempz also took third at 119 after opening with three consecutive pins, beating Birmingham Seaholm’s Alexander Simon, Petoskey’s Tristin Finwall and Troy’s Adam Cooper. Dempz was then handed his first loss in a 5-0 decision against Brendan Connelly of Yale. Dempz then pinned St. Clair’s Cam Haslem to finish third.

Mathew Dwyer finished fourth at 135 after a win by technical fall against Colton Emerick of Cros-Lex and then pinned Cros-Lex’s Jack Scheland in the second round. Dwyer then beat Chippewa Valley’s Carson Boni in a 10-8 decision, but lost a 10-1 major decision against Cros- Lex’s Christopher Lilly. In the third-place match, Dwyer fell to Trenton’s Sam Rickman in an 8-0 major decision.

At 215, Issa Abu-Joudeh took fourth place after two byes before winning by fall over North Branch’s Jacob Nellenbach. Abu- Joudeh then loss by fall against Cros-Lex’s Blake Falter and against Troy’s Will England to finish fourth.

Aiden Finn took sixth at 119 after taking out Yale’s Cory Hinton and Port Huron Northern’s Alex MacLean by fall, but lost to Yale’s Brendan Connelly by fall. In the consolation bracket, Finn beat Birmingham Seaholm’s Simon by fall. Finn then was pinned by Port Huron Northern’s Marley Munoz in the fifth-place match.

Almont had three wrestlers finish eighth in their respective weight classes. Landon Kruse was eighth at 140. Kruse won by fall against Chippewa Valley’s Keegan Kuha and St. Clair’s Joe Postma. Kruse was then pinned by Troy’s Michael Castiglione and Port Huron Northern’s Andrew Howison. In the seventh place match, Kruse lost to Trenton’s Ethan Goin.

At 145, Lane Jackson was also eighth, winning by fall against Bad Axe’s Benjamin Thompson and then received a secondround bye. Jackson then lost a 17-8 decision against Utica Stevenson’s Owen Williams and was pinned by Birmingham Seaholm’s Trevor Boyles. In the seventh place match, Jackson fell to Fisher Marriot.

Hector Contreras finished eighth at 285 after two byes that led to a 7-4 loss in the third round against Bad Axe’s Craig Phillips. Contreras then lost by fall against Yale’s Aaron Johnson and Troy’s Jack Stromberg. — K.R.

CAPAC

The Chiefs defeated Caro 39-33 in a Greater Thumb Conference dual meet last Wednesday. At 103 lbs., Loreto Frangedakis pinned Adam Fish in 0:52. At 112, Shane Hoffman won a 6-3 decision over Blair Newton. Hunter Tyson, at 125, pinned Marcus Enos in 1:06. Hunter Thorner, at 140, pinned Coven Withers in 2:20. At 285, Jared Shocke pinned Jerome Baker in 0:38.

Bryce Tank, at 215, and Ben Rodriguez, at 130, both won by forfeit.

Capac wrestles tonight against Bad Axe, Brown City and Caro at Caro Middle School. — J.O.

IMLAY CITY

The Spartans wrestled six duals at the Clio Tournament on Saturday, beginning with a 36-34 loss to Troy Athens. Joe Harper won by fall in 1:20 at 285, Dakota Sandzik won at 112 by fall in 0:27 and Austin Torres dropped a 6-3 decision at 125.

Cristian Rojas secured the pin in 1:49 at 130, Wesley Hampton won by fall in 0:55 at 135 and Rylan Powers lost a 5-2 at 140. Hunter Mullins pulled off a 9-0 major decision at 160.

The Spartans then edged Brighton, 33-32. Mullins won 3-2, Brandon Schafter lost by fall in 3:06 at 189 and Harper won by pin. Torres lost 6-1, Rojas won by fall in 2:15 and Hampton won by fall in 0:38. Taylor Eagle dropped a 17-2 technical fall at 140.

Imlay City slipped up against Clio, 52-25. Schafer lost by fall, Harper won 1-0 and Sandzik was pinned. Torres won a 13-0 major decision, Rojas won by fall in 1:15 and Hampton secured the pin in 0:55. Powers won by fall and Mullins lost a 9-1 major decision.

The Spartans bounced back with an 18-0 win over Frankenmuth. Mullins won by fall, as did Harper.

Imlay City also swallowed a 48-27 loss to Freeland. Harper won by fall in 2:55, Sandzik won 12-6 and Torres took a 6-2 victory. Rojas won 8-3, Hampton won by fall in 0:53 and Eagle was pinned in 2:00. Powers lost by fall in 4:00 and Schafer was pinned.

Imlay City capped off the day with a 29-6 win over New Haven. Sandzik won by fall in 1:16, Torres won a 17-2 technical fall and Rojas won by fall in 1:18. Hampton secured the pin in 1:06 and Powers won by fall in 0:33.

LAKEVILLE

The Falcons finished 1-4 at the Clio team tournament Saturday, defeating only Millington 49-24 on the day. LakeVille lost 52-24 to Goodrich, 40-30 to New Boston, 39-36 to Lamphere and 42-29 against Birch Run.

At 112 lbs., Nate Young was the lone LakeVille wrestler to finish 5-0, winning twice by forfeit over Lamphere and Birch Run and defeating Millington, Goodrich and New Boston by fall at :31, 2:54 and 1:49, respectively.

At 135, Cal Huggler was 4-1 with a 3-0 decision win over Birch Run, a win by fall at 3:48 over Millington, a win by fall at 1:31 over New Boston and a win by fall at 2:50 over Lamphere.

Multiple wrestlers finished 3-2 on the day, beginning with Chance Thomas at 103, who won by 11-0 decision over Millington, 5-4 decision over New Boston and 9-8 decision over Birch Run. Miles Morales at 119 won by forfeit against both New Boston and Birch Run and won by fall at 3:38 over Lamphere.

At 130, Zach Young won by 4-0 decision over New Boston, defeated Millington by fall at 3:55 and won by forfeit over Birch Run. At 140, Scott Williams won by 8-2 decision over Millington, defeated Goodrich by fall at 1:31 and won by technical fall over Birch Run.

Sam Jackson finished 2-3 at 145, defeating Millington by fall at :55 and winning by fall at 3:38 over Lamphere. Jacob Crampton at 160 was 2-2 with wins by fall over Goodrich and Lamphere at :32 and :17, respectively. Zane Shannon finished 2-3 with a win by fall over Millington at 3:59 and a win by fall over Goodrich at :19.

Isaiah Barton at 125 picked up a forfeit win over New Boston, Quinton Black won by fall at 1:18 over Millington at 152, Alex Buckel at 171 defeated Lamphere by fall at 3:07 and Ian Shannon won by fall at 1:15 over Millington.

LakeVille will compete in its league tournament Saturday at Mt. Morris. — A.V.

MAYVILLE

The Wildcats finished 3-1 at the Caro team tournament at Caro Saturday. Mayville won 45-15 over Garber, 51-24 over Swan Valley and 46-21 over Valley Lutheran but lost 56-24 to Caro.

Against Swan Valley, Madyson McDonald at 112 lbs., Jerry Gilbert at 152, Tyler Petriches at 171 and Patrick McGuire at 189 all won by forfeit. Steven Gilbert at 130 won by fall at 1:45. At 145, Steven Jackson won by fall at :11. Also winning by fall were Trent Birmingham at 160 and Peter Morden at 215, who won at :49 and 1:57, respectively. Logan LaBean at 285 won by a 1-0 decision.

In the match against Valley Lutheran, Abigale Gonzales at 130 won by forfeit, as did McGuire and McDonald. Jerry Gilbert won by fall at 2:16, Jackson won by a 17-6 major decision at Birmingham won by fall at 5:53. LaBean defeated his Valley Lutheran opponent by fall at 2:47 and Steven Gilbert won by fall at 1:00.

Against Garber, Gonzales was the lone Wildcat to win by forfeit. McDonald won her match by fall at 1:50 and Steven Gilbert defeated his opponent by fall at :42. Jerry Gilbert won by fall at 2:48, Jackson won in an 11-9 decision, Birmingham won by fall at 4:45 and Peter Morden at 215 won by fall at 1:50. LaBean won his match by fall at :11.

Against Caro, Gilbert won by fall at :23 and Morden won by fall at :39. Winning by forfeit were both LaBean and Birmingham, while the rest of the matches were won by Caro.

Mayville hosts Vassar and Ubly tonight in a make-up dual from January 16. — A.V.

NORTH BRANCH

The Broncos placed 16th with 45.5 points at the 46th Annual Jim Peltier Classic on Saturday. Cros-Lex won the event with 285, Utica Ford II was the runner-up with 232 and Trenton was third with 191.

Spencer Murphy, at 125 lbs., won by forfeit in the third-place match over Chippewa Valley’s Ryan Lee. In the semifinals, he lost a 9-5 decision to Ford II’s Noah Tgiros. Murphy also won his first three matches of the tournament. He won by 17-1 technical fall over Lincoln’s Henry Benford in his first match of the day. Murphy followed that up by winning a 13-12 decision over Trenton’s Braylon Hughes. In the third round, he pinned Utica Stevenson’s Miles Curtis in 0:28.

Anthony Hobbs, at 125, placed sixth, losing the fifth-place match to Trenton’s Hughes by fall in 2:34. Hobbs went 3-2 in the tournament. In the consolation bracket, Hobbs pinned Cros- Lex’s Jack Oliver in 0:59. He also pinned Ford II’s Nathen Carney in 1:14 and won by 17-1 technical fall over Seaholm’s Rhys Ballard. Hobbs’ only other loss was an 11-3 major decision against Chippewa Valley’s Lee.

At 215, Jacob Nellenbach placed sixth overall, losing to Trenton’s John Billadeau by fall at 1:47 in the fifth-place match. Nellenbach went 1-2 on the day after receiving a bye in the first two rounds. In the third round, he was pinned by Almont’s Issa Abu-Joudeh in 1:06. His only victory was by fall over Bad Axe’s Aaron Boone in 1:40 during the consolation bracket. — J.O.
