Dryden boys win big over Genesee

GENESEE — The Dryden boys’ basketball team picked up a dominant 64-16 win over Genesee on the road Monday.

Dryden opened the game with a 12-4 advantage in the first quarter for an early lead. The Cardinals then outscored Genesee 22-2 in the second quarter to take a commanding 34-6 lead into the break. In the third quarter, Dryden outscored Genesee 20-10 to extend its lead before closing the game out with a 10-0 run in the fourth.

Jack Kaplan scored 23 points with seven rebounds to lead Dryden. Brady Czape scored 12 points with five boards, Nathan Schenkel scored eight with four boards and Coulter Waite scored eight with two rebounds. Ronny Hudson scored seven, Jacob Livingston added six and with one apiece were Rylan Rudd and Brendan Montague.

Dryden, 5-2, visits Mayville tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. — A.V.

ALMONT

A dominant performance throughout led the Raiders to a 59-31 win over Armada at home Friday.

Almont opened the game on a 15-6 run and led 28-10 at the half. After the break, the Raiders extended their lead with a 21-6 scoring advantage in the third. Armada responded with a 15-10 run in the final frame, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Austin Watt scored 18 points with four three-pointers to lead the Raiders, tallying three steals and three assists in the process. Atte Vuoristo scored 12 points with four rebounds, Gabe Bourdeau scored six with three assists and Colby Schapman scored five with four boards. Cameron Asaro, Brett Wrobel, Mike Rinke and Matt McFarlane scored three points apiece and Darren Heman, Rafael Farias and Ignacio Aguirre each chipped in with two points.

Almont, 6-2, hosted Imlay City Tuesday after we went to press. — A.V.

CAPAC

The Chiefs put forth an impressive victory, 58-51, at Marlette last Friday.

Capac grabbed the initial lead, 19-12, and held a 27-26 lead at the half. Second half runs of 16-12 and 15-13 helped Capac put it away.

Trevor Boers racked up 28 points, 19 rebounds, five assists and nine blocks, while Jakob Sawyers tallied nine points with two boards, three assists and two steals. Jordan Hellmuth added eight points, five assists, three boards and a steal and Hank Barker totaled six points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal.

“Team had a nice night,” said Capac coach Brent Boers. “Marlette is a good team.”

Capac is at Sandusky today and hosts Ubly on Friday. — B.P.

FAITH

The Falcons varsity squad competed in their first-ever high school basketball game at the Crisler Center, in Ann Arbor recently and had the victory over Merritt Academy 53-44.

FAITH also hosted CHASE Homeschool (Flint) in a rivalry game that went into overtime with the Falcons coming out on top 71-64. The Falcons also competed in a fourteam tournament in Midland winning the tournament. — L.P.

IMLAY CITY

The Spartans were

unstoppable on both ends of the floor in a 75-24 win over Algonac at home Friday.

Imlay City led 18-7 after the first quarter and outscored its opponent 25-5 in the second for a commanding 43-12 lead going into the half. In the third quarter, the Spartans continued their dominance, outscoring Algonac 20-7 to extend the lead to 63-19 with one frame remaining. Imlay City then outscored Algonac 12-6 in the final frame .

Parker Lewis led the Spartans with 17 points, while Riley Bertram scored 13 and both Lonnie Wolford and Logan Wilson had 12 apiece. Wei Lin Liu scored 10, Mitch Allen had seven and Raymond Liu and Ross Edson both had two apiece.

Imlay City, 4-4, was at Almont Tuesday after we had gone to press. — A.V.

LAPEER

The Lightning, 1-4, were at Flushing after press deadlines on Tuesday and will host Pontiac Notre Dame Prep tomorrow at 7 p.m. — J.O.

NORTH BRANCH

The Broncos fell just short against Blue Water Area Conference rival Richmond, losing the battle 47-40 Friday.

Richmond held the slim three-point lead, 13-10, after the first quarter and increased that to five, 26-21 by halftime. North Branch trimmed the lead to just one, 30-29, still in favor of Richmond after the third stanza. Richmond was able to keep North Branch at arm’s length in the fourth.

“We played the best defense all year, we just couldn’t make a basket,” said North Branch coach Mike Snoblen. “We shot 23 percent from the field tonight.”

Riley Bugg led the Broncos with 20 pts and 17 rebounds and Gerrid Rutledge had 16 points. Drake Deshetsky had two points and was huge on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds.

North Branch, 5-4 overall, 1-3 BWAC, was at Armada yesterday after we went to press and hosts Algonac Friday. — L.P.
