Almont wins Redskin Invitational

SANDUSKY — Almont won the Redskin Invite at Sandusky on Saturday with 160 points, while host Sandusky was the runner-up with 110.5. Capac took third overall with 106.5.

Shane Hoffman at 112 lbs. and Hunter Thorner at 140 were the only Capac wrestlers to win their respective weight classes.

Thorner went 5-0 on the day, pinning Almont’s Landon Kruse in the championship match at 1:37. In the semifinal, Thorner pinned Ubly’s Austin Burk at 1:31. He won all of his other three matches pin.

Hoffman went 3-0 including a 12-0 major decision over Port Huron’s Jeremiah Swinson. He also won a 10-8 major decision over Bad Axe’s Jordan Osentoski and a 4-3 decision over teammate Nathan Schocke.

The loss was Schocke’s lone defeat at the tournament, as he finished in second place with a 2-1 record. Schocke won an 18-3 technical fall over Swinson and pinned Osentoski at 1:03.

At 103, Loreto Frangedakis finished 3-1 in second place. He pinned Brown City’s Whitley Blake at 4:00, Michigan Lutheran Seminary’s Liam Kopp at 2:30 and Mio’s Tyler Demory at 3:54. Frangedakis’s only loss was a 9-2 decision against Almont’s Dallas Stanton.

Arturo Rosales at 160 and Bryce Tank at 215 each placed third. Rosales pinned Sandusky’s Andrew Filkins in the third-place match at 3:00. Tank pinned Marlette’s Cody Hatcher at 3:32 in his third-place match.

Capac wrestles again tonight in its fourth GTC meet of the season against Caro, Ubly and host Vassar. The meet will start at 6 p.m. — J.O.

IMLAY CITY

The Spartans had several top performances at their individual tournament on Saturday at home.

At 130, Rylan Powers opened with a win over Byron by fall in 1:17 before being pinned in 2:57 by Cass City. He then received a bye in the consolation bracket before pinning Webberville in 4:36. He then secured fifth place with a 9-6 win over Byron. Kyle Kulin began the 152 bracket with a win over Carrollton by fall in 1:40 and then topped St. Clair by fall in 4:26. He pinned Farwell in 2:00 and then took first place with a 6-1 decision over Mt. Morris.

At 189, Brandon Schafer lost his opener by fall in 0:46 to Byron before getting a bye in the consolation bracket. He went on to lose to Lansing Waverly by fall in 1:24.

Dakota Sandzik began his day with a win over Clawson by fall in 1:08 at 112 and then pinned Waverly in 4:33. He fell in the semifinals to Byron by pin in 5:46 and locked up third place with a win by fall in 3:30 over Ovid-Elsie.

Mason Phillips started the 119 bracket with a bye and then pinned Cass City in 5:51. He swallowed a loss by fall in 0:57 to Flint Powers Catholic and then lost the third place match, 4-3, to Mt. Morris.

Wesley Hampton received a bye at 135 and then won by fall in 0:46 over Saginaw Valley Lutheran. He took home first place with a win by fall in just 0:22 over Waverly.

At 145, Isaac Schmitz lost by fall in 1:41 to Mt. Morris. He then drew a bye in the consolation bracket and then pinned Cass City in 4:37. He was pinned in 3:30 by Valley Lutheran.

Austin Torres, at 125, pinned Royal Oak in 0:32 before dropping a 12-1 major decision to North Branch. He then topped Oxford by fall in 3:31 and won a 5-3 decision over Cass City. He wrapped up fifth place with a win by pin over Byron in 2:51.

At 140, Cesare Carta was pinned in 0:42 by Ovid-Elsie and then drew a bye in the consolation. He lost a 4-1 decision to Webberville.

Ricky Guerrero got a bye at 150 and then was pinned in 1:33 by Valley Lutheran. He took a win by fall in 1:37 over Macomb Lutheran North and then topped Valley Lutheran by fall in 4:08. In the fifth-place match, Guerrero lost a 15-0 technical fall to Farwell.

Chris Torres got a bye at 215 and then lost by fall in 3:05 to Farwell. He also dropped a 6-5 decision to Ovid-Elsie.

At 171, Hunter Mullins drew the bye and then pinned Oxford in 0:52. He took a 16-5 major decision over Cass City before falling in the first-place match, 10-3, to Mt. Morris.

Joe Harper drew a bye and then pinned North Branch in 0:49. He took down Mt. Morris by fall in 5:32 and then won his weight class, 11-8, over Lake Fenton.

The Spartans are at Croswell-Lexington today. — B.P.

LAPEER

The Lightning were at the Linden duals on Saturday, where they took a 78-6 loss to Greenville. Lapeer voided 160 and then Jett Land lost by fall in 0:50 at 171. Steven Saunders was pinned in 0:48 at 189, Lapeer forfeited 215 and then Chase Wells won by fall in 1:02 at 285.

The Lightning voided 103, Danielle Ranshaw was pinned in 0:47 at 112 and Isaac Chaffin lost by fall in 0:49 at 119. At 125, Ashton Light was pinned in 0:30, Ryan Lowe lost by fall in 2:10 at 130 and Dyani DeMoss was pinned in 0:58 at 135. Lapeer then voided the 140, 145 and 152 matches.

The Lightning were also shut out 78-0 against Pinckney. Wells lost by fall in 3:39, 103 was a double void and Ranshaw was pinned in 0:15. Chaffin lost by disqualification, Light was pinned in 1:16 and Lowe lost by fall in 0:44.

DeMoss took the loss by fall in 1:39, 140, 145, 152, 160 and 215 were all forfeited by Lapeer and Land lost by fall in 0:20. Saunders was also pinned in 1:22. — B.P.

LAKEVILLE

The Falcons finished 4-1 at the Vassar Team Tournament Saturday. LakeVille won 69-12 over Breckenridge, 63-11 over Esseville Garber, 64-12 over Hemlock and 63-15 over Vassar, but lost 37-30 to Holly.

Multiple wrestlers finished undefeated on the day, beginning with Nate Young at 112 lbs., who won three times by forfeit, once by fall and once by decision. At 135, Zach Young won twice by fall, twice by decision and once by forfeit. Miles Morales at 119 was 4-0 with two wins by forfeit, one by fall and one by decision. Mathis Schneider at 119 was 1-0 with a win by forfeit.

At 103, Chance Thomas was 4-1 with three wins by forfeit and one by fall. Scott Williams, at 140, was 4-1 with three wins by fall and one by forfeit. At 145, Sam Jackson was 4-1 with three forfeit wins and one by fall. Jacob Crampton was 4-1 at 152 with three wins by fall and one by forfeit. At 160, Quinton Black was 4-1 with three wins by fall and one by forfeit.

Zane Shannon finished 4-1 at 215 with three wins by decision and one by forfeit. At 285, Liam Shannon was 4-1 with two forfeit wins and two by fall. Isaiah Barton at 125 finished 3-2 with all wins coming by forfeit. At 171, Alex Buckel finished 1-4 with a win by fall and, at 189, Taneo Schmier was also 1-4, picking up a win by forfeit.

MAYVILLE

The Wildcats competed in the New Lothrop Hall of Fame Tournament Friday.

At 285 lbs., Logan LaBean was the lone Mayville wrestler to place within the top-four, finishing fourth overall.

LaBean started his day with a firstround bye before defeating Perry by fall at 3:26 in the quarterfinals. LaBean then lost to Birch Run by sudden victory in the semifinal and to Richmond by decision in the thirdplace match.

At 125, Steven Gilbert had a firstround bye and then lost to Kearsley by fall in the quarterfinal. He then had a bye to the consolation semifinal, where he lost to New Lothrop by fall.

At 171, Trent Birmingham won by fall over Carman-Ainsworth at 2:51 to start his day, but lost in the quarterfinal to Beaverton by major decision. In the second consolation round, Birmingham defeated Bronson by decision before losing to Richmond by fall in the consolation semifinal.

Peter Morden, at 189, lost his opening match by fall to Sand Creek, but then received a bye in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Morden lost by fall to New Lothrop.

Losing both their matches on the day were Jerry Gilbert at 135, Steven Jackson at 140 and Tyler Petriches at 160.

NORTH BRANCH

The Broncos finished 14th overall with 42.5 points at the 32nd Annual Spartan Invite at Imlay City Saturday.

Spencer Murphy, at 125 lbs., finished second in his weight class, losing a 12-1 major decision to Clawson’s Alexander Shrum in the championship match. In the semifinals, Murphy won an 18-3 technical fall over Cass City’s Lucas Swiderski. He also won a 12-1 major decision over Imlay City’s Austin Torres in the quarterfinal and pinned Clawson’s Camyrn Harlen Williams at 2:00 in the opening round.

Anthony Hobbs placed fourth overall at 130. Hobbs lost the thirdplace match in a 4-3 decision to Cass City’s Tristan Swiderski. His lone win came in the quarterfinal, when he pinned Byron’s Nolan Lange at 1:12.

Tonight, the Broncos host a BWAC Quad against Algonac, Almont, Richmond and Yale. The match will start at 6 p.m. — J.O.
