The credit union hosted its annual member appreciation open house at their Lapeer branch, located at 168 N. Saginaw St., on Aug. 8-9, and has also teamed up with the LEADER Fund to organize a school supply drive, which will benefit Lapeer Community Schools countywide. The effort, initially started in Genesee County by Sovita several years ago, was organized for Lapeer for the first time last year and will last through August 31.

The supply drive is intended to benefit teachers at Lapeer schools, who often go into their own pockets to offer their students school supplies. LEADER Fund and Sovita have set up a number of drop-off locations throughout Lapeer to help collect items for teachers and students. Items that should be donated include pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, crayons, dry erase markers, notebooks, paper, post-it notes, scissors, markers, colored pencil, chalk, construction paper, paper clips, tape, folders, Kleenex, hand sanitizer and similar items. Also, for those that wish to donate money to the supply drive, all donations are tax-exempt charitable deductions, as the LEADER Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. See a teller at any of Sovita’s locations in order to make a donation to the fund. All donations made in Lapeer will go to Lapeer Community Schools, and all donations made in Genesee County will go to Flint Schools.

Drop-off locations include Sovita Credit Union on N. Saginaw St., View Newspaper Group, Speedy Screen Printing, Metamora Golf & Country Club, Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce, Cislo Title Company, ZF, Lapeer County Vision Center and Louie’s Sports Tavern.

The LEADER Fund (Lapeer Education & Athletic Development Expense Resource) was formed in May 2015 with the mission of assisting Lapeer Community Schools in funding of the new athletic complex, providing academic scholarships to Leaders in the senior class as well as being a funding resource for academic endeavors, athletic groups and faculty.
