Millage renewal sought for North Branch Twp. Library

NORTH BRANCH TWP. — Operators of North Branch Township Library seek renewal of a 1.0-millage when voters go to the polls Tuesday.

Voters will be asked to approve a 10-year millage, estimated in the first year to collect $97,000 that will be used for general operating purposes for North Branch Township Library (NBTL). The current millage, that expired last year, was approved Aug. 7, 2012.

According to NBTL Librarian Kelli Lovasz, the community has traditionally been supportive of its library. And with the yearly millage representing the lion’s share of the library’s budget, she hopes that support will continue. “Currently the millage is 87 percent of the NBTL’s operating funds, and covers the cost of materials, programs, computers, technology and personnel, along with the building maintenance, repairs and utilities,” said Lovasz. “With utility costs and other expenses increasing the NBTL has become even more dependent upon its millage income.”

In addition to keeping the doors open and the lights on, Lovasz said there are a number of ongoing projects and services that the millage will allow the library to continue. Lovasz said she and her staff have been looking to digitize the library’s historical North Branch Gazette newspaper collection and make them available and accessible online. “We currently offer oneon one assistance to patrons with their technical devices, with the renewal of the millage we hope to increase staff time for this sought-after program,” she said. “We also look to offer more teen programming and increase current materials.”

According to Lovasz, the NBTL isn’t just a home for a collection of books — it’s a community hub. “The renewal of our 1 mill millage will allow us to not only continue this mission, but improve upon it,” she said.
