IMLAY CITY — The last thing many students want to think about in July is school, but the importance of maintaining a strong reading routine doesn’t take a summer vacation. To encourage their students to continue their reading during the summer months, educators at Imlay City Schools will be bringing the books to them.

The Spartan Book Mobile is a retrofitted school bus that has been packed with donated books of all age levels and topics and is heading into residential areas around Imlay City this summer. The Spartan Book Mobile is part of the school’s Summer Reading Program and aims to provide reading material for students that might otherwise not have access.

Imlay City Schools (ICS) Director of Elementary Education Dina Tallis said the community has really taken to the Spartan Book Mobile. “We will make stops throughout Imlay City and (families are) welcome to visit the Book Mobile for exciting reading materials,” she said. “We have materials for infants through adulthood.”

Tallis said in addition to the Spartan Book Mobile, ICS will host two more events throughout the summer.

Wednesday, July 18 will see a Pop-Up in the Park take place, where some of students’ favorite teachers will be on hand at the gazebo in Lamb Steele Park to read stories, beginning at 11 a.m.

Summer Reading activities wrap up with a Wednesday, Aug. 1 Reading and Sports Night at 5-7 p.m., which will feature teachers, coaches and student athletes read aloud about different sports and participate in a sports skills clinic.
