Playgroups designed to promote reading in children

LAPEER — Reading isn’t something to be done only within the confines of a school building. Skill in reading is as important as ever, and The Family Literacy Center is encouraging parents of young children to promote reading by participating in a pair of playgroups scheduled throughout the summer.

A new playgroup is beginning, said FLC volunteer Maureen Parker, that will provide early literacy lessons for children aged 0-5. Starting Tuesday (July 10), the six-week course will also feature reading, snacks, crafts, puzzles, games and songs.

Also set to begin this month, July 23, is a six-week course held at North Branch Elementary School which still has openings, said Parker. The course held in North Branch is provided by funds raised by the Morgan Fike Memorial.

To register for summer literacy courses or for more information, call the Family Literacy Center at 810-664-2737.
