LAPEER — Students at Bishop Kelley Catholic School in Lapeer gathered Thursday afternoon around the school’s flagpole before dismissal for a brief ceremony to commemorate Memorial Day.

Students sang “America the Beautiful,” heard “Taps” performed by sixth-grade students Ava Landry and Eli Anglebrandt, said a prayer and held a moment of silence to remember those who died while in the service of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The students also presented a check for $267 to U.S. Army First Lt. Austin Westmoreland who will take the money to a Family Readiness Program at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County. The money was raised by the students who participated in a “jean day” held last week, where they made a cash donation for the privilege to wear casual clothes to school.
