Estate planning workshop for families with children to be held at Lapeer library

LAPEER — The Lapeer District Library’s Marguerite deAngeli Branch (921 W. Nepessing St.) will host attorney Jennifer Ackroyd-Fabris on Monday, April 23 at 6 p.m. to discuss the ins and outs of estate planning for families with minor children.

She will discuss the basics of estate planning, including commonly asked questions such as: What is the difference between a will and a trust? Who needs powers of attorney? How should my beneficiaries be set up?

She will also explain:

• The steps of how a guardian is step up for your minor children to ensure the people you choose get custody of them;

• How to establish a plan to ensure that all your wishes are followed, even after you pass, when it comes to raising your children;

• Discuss the implication of having a child who is 18, but still supported by their parents;

• Address the concern that parents of special needs children have and how to be sure that your death does not affect your child’s eligibility for benefits now and in the future.

• How to set up a temporary authority for a person to give consent to medical treatment for a minor child if you are on vacation.
