Lapeer Police bag shoplifter

LAPEER — Lapeer Police say a 35-year-old Metamora man tried to make off with $500 worth of merchandise from the Walmart store on East Genesee Street Tuesday (Feb. 6) evening. He’s now being held in the Lapeer County Jail.

Officer Steve Hinsberger was sent to the store at 7:44 p.m. Tuesday following reports of a shoplifting incident. The man, whose name has not been released pending arraignment, had fled the store before Hinsberger arrived, but Hinsberger found the man at a nearby business and arrested him without incident.

Hinsberger reported finding $500 worth of Walmart merchandise in the man’s pickup truck, located in the store’s parking lot. He also reported finding an illegal prescription.

The man was charged with first-degree retail fraud, trespassing and possession of a dangerous drug.
