Volunteers sought to provide paczkis to veterans during coffee hour Tuesday

LAPEER — Volunteers wanting to assist elderly veterans are in for a treat Tuesday, Feb. 13. A coffee hour, featuring world famous North Branch Bakery paczkis and (candy) kisses will be held from 9 -10 a.m. at the Lapeer County Veterans Affairs (LCVA) office, 287, W. Nepessing. Also served that day will be an explanation of the KISS (Keeping Independent Seniors Safe Program).

Program volunteers keep daily tabs on elderly veterans via the telephone. The program is a first in Lapeer County and is coordinated by the Valley Area on the Aging and the LCVA.

“There are numerous elderly veterans in Lapeer County and this program provides an opportunity keep tabs on them, insure their well-being,” said Edward L. Ronders, LCVA director. “It’s a simple matter of checking on our veterans by telephone. The program is already up and running in Genesee County and works well. We just want to make sure our elderly heroes are doing okay.”

Tuesday Feb. 13 is also known as Fat Tuesday — the day prior to the start of Lent. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday,” reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. For more information, call 810-667-0256.
