LAPEER — With dozens of service clubs, churches and community organizations in Lapeer County all holding various events, fundraisers, fairs, festivals and more throughout the year, it’s difficult to keep everything straight. But with a new initiative, the Lapeer District Library hopes to bring a little bit of order to the chaos.

On Tuesday LDL Children’s Services Director Dena Moscheck shared details with executive director of the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce Neda Payne and Family Literacy Center Director Mary Shelton-Wiese about a new Lapeer Community Calendar that with a little luck and a lot of community involvement will become another source for information about what’s happening in the county. Lapeer County residents and the public-at-large will have one-click access to hundreds of events held in the community, free of charge.

“We get calls all the time for other groups’ events, when they are,” said Payne. “This is awesome, having everything all in one place — the real challenge will be getting the community to utilize this as a resource.” Sortable by date, keyword, category and organization, the calendar will provide Lapeer area residents and visitors with a detailed breakdown of various upcoming events held by participating community organizations.

And as more organizations sign on, the fuller the calendar will become, said Moscheck. “Organizations are encouraged to get themselves and their events listed,” she said. Currently events planned by CMH, the Lapeer County ISD, FLC and more are included in the calendar, with more organizations and events, including the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce and this summer’s Lapeer Days schedule, on the way.

“There will be a list of tags, so that if someone is searching for something specific they can sort all the events,” said Moscheck. “We’re able to pull all these organizations and events together in one central location and curate it.”

“What a great resource for the community,” said Payne. “This will be an amazing resource if we can get people moving on it.” Community organizations interested in registering their events with the Lapeer Community Calendar are asked to visit getlocalhop.com, click on the tab labeled “services” and fill out the “sign up and get started” section.

The Lapeer Community Calendar is currently online and can be found at www.library.lapeer.org/ community-calendar. As more organizations register their events, the calendar will update to include them.
