MARGARET FARLEY, 99, of Imlay City (recently of Lapeer County Medical Care Facility), died Friday, January 5, 2018, at McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital.

Mary Margaret Farley was born October 27, 1918, in Burley Hospital, Almont, the daughter of Mark and Mary O’Neill Farley. Margaret grew up on the family dairy farm in Imlay Twp. and moved to Imlay City in 1980. She had been living in the Oxford area for most of the past 10 years.

Margaret attended O’Neill Rural School in Imlay Twp., Rider Rural School in Almont Twp. and was a graduate of Almont High School, Class of 1936. She received her teacher training at Lapeer County Normal, attended the University of Colorado and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from Michigan Teachers Normal College in Ypsilanti (now Eastern Michigan University), in 1948. Margaret taught for 6 years at the Rider and Bowers schools, both local country schools. She taught for 9 years in the Imlay City District, 1 year in Birmingham, and retired in 1978, having taught 22 years (including Title 1 Reading) for Almont Community Schools.

Margaret was a 70-year member of the Almont Literary Club, a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Imlay City and Chairperson of the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery Society for 25 years. Other interests included writing, gardening, painting, and researching family genealogy. She was also the author of a reflective book about Michigan farm life in the Twentieth Century.

Margaret is survived by her sister, Ruth Farley of Oxford; many cousins; and special friends and caregivers, Robert and Sandy Nickora.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and infant sister, Jean Elizabeth Farley.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may direct them to a charity of their choice.

The visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, with a Rosary commencing at 4:30 p.m. at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, 225 N. Main Street, Imlay City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 700 Maple Vista, Imlay City. Rev. Fr. Jerry Frawley of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Ortonville will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Imlay City.
