An opportunity to support local charities and nonprofits

Editor’s note: You’ve heard of Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday, and you’ve probably heard of Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Just as important as those, however, is a day that may not sound quite as familiar: Giving Tuesday.

Still in its infancy, Giving Tuesday has steadily gained momentum in the past few years, catching on after its inception in 2012 by a small group of charities in New York City. The idea is to turn mass consumer spending into mass consumer donating, flooding local and national charities with contributions just in time for the holiday season.

The important thing to remember is that all donations make an impact, and that individual donations make up the largest percentage of charitable giving. According to a National Center for Charitable Statistics report, “Giving by individuals of contributions received by nonprofit organizations,” individual giving makes up almost three quarters of all charitable donations.

Today our Insight focus is on a few of the many local organizations that are worthy of your consideration. Because, where better to give than right here at home?
