Columbiaville Elementary to host Vets in the Classroom

COLUMBIAVILLE — What started as the idea of a few teachers at Columbiaville Elementary a decade ago has grown into a yearly event that students, staff and visitors circle on their calendars. On Friday, Nov. 10, LakeVille Community Schools’ Vets in the Classroom at Columbiaville Elementary will once again see veterans from the Otisville American Legion Post 321 visit the building to spend a day mingling with the young students.

The day starts bright and early with a special flag-raising ceremony at 8:45 a.m., followed by a check-in period at 1 p.m. For a half-hour beginning around 2 p.m., the visiting vets will tour the school, stopping into classrooms where they’ll share stories of their time in the armed services with the students.

“We go over to the elementary and we have a nice ceremony there,” said Otisville American Legion Post 321 Adjutant Ken Schultz. “We go to the classroom and we tell a little bit about our background in the service, nothing violent or anything, of course, just sort of what we did as a serviceperson.”

Following the classroom tour, Schultz and the other veterans will head to the cafeteria area for an assembly that will close out the day. “We have a good time with the kids,” said Schultz. “They get a lot of information.”
