Almont Twp. revises zoning code

ALMONT TWP. — Almont Township’s zoning code should be a little easier to read July 26. Township trustees voted Monday evening to approve a series of “housekeeping” revisions to the code.

Township clerk Carol Hoffner said the code has been revised several times since 2011 and township planners have spent the past year cleaning it up. “It’s more manageable now,” she said.

The revised code will be officially published Wednesday (July 19) and go into effect seven days later.

Hoffner said trustees discussed the possibility of changing how it handles code enforcement complaints. Currently Joe Israel, the township’s building inspector, responds to residents’ complaints.

She said some trustees are interested in having a dedicated code enforcement officer, similar to what Imlay City has, who would proactively deal with local ordinance violations. No decision was made Monday.

The township’s board of review will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday (July 18) at the township hall, 819 N. Main St., to consider requests for poverty exemptions and principal residence exemptions as well as assertions of clerical errors. The board will likely field six or seven requests and be done by noon.
