Support our local environment go green

Last week many people across Lapeer County, including students, in a lead-up to Earth Day on Saturday, participated in programs and activities to promote better stewardship of our local environment.

There are many ways people do their part every day to leave this planet a cleaner, healthier place to live for human beings, animals, plants and wildlife. Some make it a point to never miss Lapeer County Drop-Off Recycling held the first and third Saturday of the month at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mayfield Township, while others are mindful of the fertilizers and weed killers they put on their lawns or farm fields that could runoff into area lakes, rivers and streams after a heavy rainfall.

Many people elect to help the environment during their weekly shopping trips for groceries and domestic products — by refraining from purchasing single-serving packages wrapped in toxic plastic in favor of bulk containers.

Today’s INSIGHT package spotlights just a few of the ways Lapeer County residents lend a hand to improve the environment, whether by monitoring the water quality of the Flint River and cleaning its riverbanks to getting down and dirty to remove non-native, invasive plants at Seven Ponds Nature Center.

The fact is it doesn’t need to take a big event like Earth Day to remind us of the importance of doing our part to ensure our water, air and landscape in Lapeer County remain pure for generations to come.

Together, we can make a difference.
