How is the date of Easter determined?

It may feel like Easter is happening late this year, but it could have been even later.

The reason?

The church calendar is based on the status of the moon. Specifically, Easter is celebrated the first Sunday after the first calculated full moon on or after March 21, which is the date of the vernal, or spring, equinox.

Because of the regularity of lunar cycles, that means Easter Day can be on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

In case you’re wondering, Easter will be on April 25 (the latest it can be) in 2038. It will be on March 22 (the earliest possible date) in 2285.
