Ferris, Jacobs 2016 Citizens of Year in Lapeer


Lauraine Ferris, left, and Wayne Jacobs Lauraine Ferris, left, and Wayne Jacobs LAPEER — Last January the Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce presented its 37th Annual Citizen of the Year awards.

Lauraine Ferris, 68, of Lapeer Township, was named the female Citizen of the Year. Ferris taught 30 years for Lapeer Community Schools, has supported Special Olympics and United Way before becoming involved with 4-H. She volunteers at McLaren Lapeer Region.

The 2016 female citizens of the year nominees also included Gaye Butterfield and Carol Lambert.

Wayne Jacobs, 69, of Mayfield Township, was awarded the honors as the male Citizen of the Year. Retired from The County Press, Jacobs served four tours in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969 with the U.S. Army where he earned a Bronze and Silver Star. Jacobs serves the Lapeer County Voiture 1526 40 et 8. He took over the Fantasy Forest from the Zanta Club after it disbanded locally.

Other male nominees included Walt Bargen, Glenn Ream, Chuck Lambert and Bill Rykus.

The Chamber presented youth awards to Lapeer High School students to spotlight their civic involvement. Earning a $1,000 scholarship and the 2016 Female Youth award was Alyssa Garcia. The Male Youth award was presented to Ian English.
