City hall suicide stuns Imlay City

IMLAY CITY — City residents were stunned Sept. 6 after a city employee’s husband broke into city hall and killed himself.

It was the second time in five years that a domestic suicide took place in the city of 3,600. In December of 2011 Marcel Stutz, 42, stabbed and shot his wife, Lara, to death before barricading himself in their home.

City manager Tom Youatt found the body of Keith McAvoy, 41, dead of a self-inflicted .22 caliber gunshot wound when he arrived to open the building following the Labor Day holiday weekend. City hall was closed for nearly a week as the front office area was renovated and city employees received grief counseling.
