One-room schoolhouse for sale

HADLEY TWP. — One-room schoolhouses are a thing of the past, and most of the ones in Lapeer County have either crumbled away or been transformed into homes.

The Farmers Creek school at 3130 Baldwin Road was one that was in danger of disappearing but it was lovingly restored beginning in late 2009 thanks to the late Bill Carpenter. It was in operation as a school from 1860 to 1962. After Carpenter’s restoration, the building was dedicated last fall with an open house and pig roast in celebration of Carpenter’s 80th birthday. Sadly, Carpenter passed away in January.

Now the restored schoolhouse’s future is uncertain. It was recently put up for sale through Coldwell Banker. It is listed for $54,900, and suggested possible uses in the listing are a day care, church, service club, antique store or resale shop.
