Memorial race coming to Lapeer

LAPEER -- Derek Stone, Lapeer East grad and founder of Milestone Racing Inc., will bring a new race to the area in June. Dubbed the Beatty-Daley challenge in honor of his best friend, Thomas Daley, and cousin Michael Beatty, whose lives were cut short, Stone has set a tentative date for June 2 at 9 a.m. His permit is still pending, but expected to be approved. The race will have three parts, the Daley 5k and the Beatty mile (invite only) and a Beatty-Daley 5k walk. Online registration is available at www.racemilestone.com. Stone hopes to bring a large portion of the community together for the memorial races. — L.P. Michigan Warriors future in limbo

FLINT — The Michigan Warriors of the North American Hockey League, currently based at Flint's Perani Arena, have been granted dormancy by the NAHL, along with six other franchises. The reason for the team being granted dormancy is because the Warriors and Perani Arena are in talks that involve running both the team and the arena under the same business. They intend to keep the team in Flint, but the dormancy status also means a lack of commitment for next season. If the agreement between the team and venue is not reached, there is a good chance the Warriors will not return to Flint, however, an agreement is not needed to bring the team back next year. Owner Pat McEachern has already come out and said that he is willing to sell the team or relocate if the right offer comes along, but he isn't currently shopping around, as the goal is to remain in Flint.

The development comes just days after the Northern Professional Hockey League removed Flint from their prospective cities list on the league's website. That's not to say they won't pursue that option, but as for now, a potential new franchise in Flint is on hold until the future of the Warriors is determined. — B.P. Lions play LCS staff
