Moral discomfort In response to In Our Words “Federal ruling riles many Catholics,” thank you for raising the issue. Yes, our priest read the letter from the archbishop stating that the President was giving “we believers” a year to figure out how to violate our consciences. Believe me, this is the first of many shots that will fly over the bow of the Constitution and at Christianity. For someone who touts his Christian faith, Barack Obama should know better. He is, for all practical purposes, a “poser.” This is an assault on religion and an insult to Christianity. Obama found a way to compromise with the Catholic church? He’s turning it over to the insurance company which will in turn advise the Catholic church, Catholic universities, Catholic charities, and their group affiliates that will all be paying for abortion, et al. In Our Words is spot on to ask what other protected freedoms might be revoked. After all, in Barack’s first campaign he said the Constitution was a hindrance to what he wanted to do. I also would like to know, where will they stop? Who would be next on the abortion list — the challenged, the elderly, maybe welfare recipients. This government is beginning to think like China. There has been a bill introduced in Congress called the Respect of Rights of Conscience Act (HR1179-S1467). It ensures those who participate in the health care system to retain the right to provide, purchase, and enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions. This whole issue of abortion and where the government is trying to take us should be cause for great moral discomfort. But then, one would have to have morals, wouldn’t one? I will contact Rep. Miller and ask her to co-sponsor HR1179. Please help. For those of you who feel abortion is right, why don’t you just step up to the plate and pay for it yourself. Shouldn’t the expense of an abortion, et al, be upon the person seeking the abortion? Sounds right to me. Life, liberty and the pursuit of those who keep threatening it. Virginia Schell Attica |
