Toys-for-Tots begins taking donations

LAPEER COUNTY — With the holiday season just around the corner, the local Toys-for- Tots program will begin taking donations at various locations around the county by the end of this week or the beginning of next week, said program organizer Michael T. Havermale.

Started in 1947, the Toys-for- Tots program is a charity organization of the U.S. Marine Corps that works to ensure every child receives at least one toy for Christmas. By accepting donations at dropboxes,

Toys-for-Tots is able to distribute toys to families in need before Christmas.

Locally, the Toys-for-Tots office will again be set up in the Lyric Mall in downtown Lapeer. All toys and monetary donations given will be kept within the county, said Havermale. Checks may be made out to Toys for Tots, P.O. Box 332 Lapeer, MI, 48446.

Havermale said the program and the need it fills has doubled every year for the past several years. He said, however, that the community has helped support Toys-for-Tots as that need has grown. “They trust in what it is and what it’s about. The community believes in it and it shows in the support.”

New, unwrapped toys may be donated to Toys-for-Tots at drop boxes around the county soon. Distribution hours will be held in late November and December. During those hours, parents may register for toys to give to their children. Havermale said the program is simple, and the application is processed and the toys are handed out at the same time. To be eligible to receive toys, applicants must bring a current driver’s license or photo I.D., birth certificates of all children and proof of financial assistance, such as a Bridge Card or Medicare.

Any businesses interested in helping Toys for Tots by setting up a drop box may contact Havermale by calling 810- 688-8025. For more information, go online to www.toysfortots.org.
