Area athletes compete in Bruin basketball

Photo by DAN NILSEN FLINT — The 2011 Mott Bruin Club Basketball Classic took place on Thursday at Ballenger Fieldhouse. The girls’ game started the night off with a competitive, 88- 83, victory for the Black squad over the Gold.

Porsha Fluker of Hamady was MVP for the Black, while Hamady teammate, Arlesia Morse was MVP of the Gold squad with a game-high 28 points.

Area athletes listed on the rosters included LakeVille’s Kayla Spohn and Capac’s Jennica Polzin on the Gold squad and LakeVille’s Kaili Hemingway on the Black squad. Polzin scored nine points in the defeat.

Hamady coach Keith Smith coached the Gold squad, while Atherton coach Jim Vanitvelt guided the Black squad to victory.

The boys’ game saw the Gold team rout the Black team, 119-98. The Gold team was made up of players from the city schools, while the Black team was made up of players from suburban schools.

Photo by MICHAEL SELECKY Flint Northern’s Shaq Smith was the MVP for the Gold team with 20 points, while Goodrich’s Trevor Lucas earned the honor for the Black squad with 18 points. LakeVille’s Romel Morgan was a member of the Black squad.
