Photo provided PORT HURON— The SC4 Foundation hosted a charity hockey game on Saturday, March 26 at McMorran Place Arena in Port Huron, the current home of the North American Hockey League’s Port Huron Fighting Falcons.

The event was known as the “Skating For A Cause Fundraising Game”, which drew a crowd of about 1,758 hockey fans. The game itself raised more than $12,000 dollars in ticket sales and concessions for the SC4 Foundation. More money was accumulated with a 50-50 raffle, and a chuck-a-puck contest with the winner receiving a new television.

The game was dedicated to Mary M. Barss, whose family contributed greatly to the event, with a donation of $20,000 to the Foundation, made in Mary’s name to create an endowment fund. The fund will be used to help establish an annual scholarship geared toward nursing students at St. Clair County Community College.

The money continued to flow in for the charity, especially when funds were generated with $5 donations for each autograph of the Red Wings’ alumni squad. The Red Wings’ alumni played a separate team representing the SC4 Foundation, mostly made up of people within the charitable organization such as Brian Crankshaw, Jon Finstrom and Paul MacDonald. Some of the big names on the Red Wings alumni roster were George Bowman, Shawn Burr, Lorne Knauft, Dino Ciccarelli, Darren McCarty, Kevin Miller, Brian Smolinski, Tim Taylor and Paul Ysebaert.

When it came down to game time, the Red Wings’ alumni triumphed with a 7-5 victory. Although the SC4 Foundation could not skate away with a win, they triumphed as well, thanks to many great donations made to their organization throughout the night.
