Sprinkler limits damage in commercial fire

LAPEER — A lone sprinkler head is credited with saving a South Main Street business from all but smoke damage after a small fire broke out Sunday night.

Lapeer Fire Dept. Assistant Fire Chief James Muxlow said crews from the city and Elba Township were called to 520 South Main at 9:45 p.m. Sunday after a fire alarm in the building, which contains Master Wireless and several vacant units, went off.

Muxlow said the building was filled with smoke when his fire fighters arrived. He said they found a small fire on a storage shelf in the building’s mechanical room.

He said a sprinkler head in the room, the only one in the building, had gone off keeping the fire contained until fire fighters arrived.

Still, said Muxlow, smoke and water did an estimated $5,000 damage. No one was injured in the fire, and crews were finished with clean up by 11:10 p.m., he said.
