New book explores Michigan’s fens EAST LANSING — Michigan State University has released a new book about one of the state’s unique ecosystems — the prairie fen wetlands of southern lower Michigan. “Exploring the Prairie Fen Wetlands of Michigan” provides everyone from high school students to experienced naturalists with a description of prairie fen landscapes, ecological processes and vegetation. It includes vignettes that highlight fen animal and plant species. It also features an overview of threats facing prairie fens, as well as restoration and management activities that readers can become involved with to help preserve and restore this unique habitat and its species. Finally, it provides a reference of places to visit prairie fens along with checklists of fen plants and animals. “Prairie fens are globally rare wetlands that are dominated by sedges and grasses and provide habitat to hundreds of native plants and animals,” said Michael Kost, an ecologist with the Michigan Natural Features Inventory and one of the book’s authors. “In addition to being incredibly rich in biological diversity, prairie fens form the pristine headwaters of many of our region’s rivers and lakes,” He added. “These wetland communities serve as a rich biological reservoir and form a critical component of the natural landscape of southern Michigan.” “Exploring the Prairie Fen Wetlands of Michigan” is available for $10 (plus tax, shipping and handling) from the MSU Extension Bulletin office or the Michigan Natural Features Inventory. To order, visit www.emdc.msue.msu.edu or the MNFI site at msue.msu.edu/mnfi. |
