LANSING — It was not enough satisfaction for the Lapeer West girls’ golf team just to make the MHSAA Div. 2 State Finals at the Forest Akers golf course at Michigan State University last week, as the Lady Panthers wanted to leave their mark by playing some of their best golf of the season. Mission accomplished. The West girls set a new school record in the process of firing a two-day round of 745 to finish seventh overall in the state.

Lapeer West shot a 364 on the second day of competition, a new mark that comes on the heels of another outstanding performance at regionals last week, when West carded a 365 to advance to the finals. In Friday's opening round at the finals, the Panthers shot a 381, which was the third-lowest 18- hole score in school history.

“It was a great team effort,” proclaimed Lapeer West coach Mike Ogg. “We set two school records within a few days of each other and this was the perfect time to play such good golf. We are pleased with this performance and are happy with how we finished up.”

Senior Catherine Benscoter, as she has done for much of the season, led the Lady Panthers with a fine round of 83–88 to finish with 171. Sophomore Lindsay Yateman carded a 96 on the first day of competition and came back with a 92 for a total of 188 to place second among the Lapeer golfers. Kim Brown, a junior, was a stroke back with a round of 189, Elizabeth Rodela, a senior, came into the clubhouse with a 197 and was one of three West golfers to card a 92 on the second day of action and Lauren Weeks, a sophomore, rounded out the Lapeer scoring with a 223.

Although not qualifying as a team, Lapeer East did see senior Keely Turczyn qualify as an individual. Turczyn finish her state meet with a 92-84-176, eight strokes back from finishing in the top ten in the state for Div. 2.
