LAPEER — This year marks the 20th anniversary of Lapeer Gold & Diamond, a locally-owned and locally-committed jewelry store and community fixture committed to providing Lapeer with some of the most exquisite and affordable gemstones, precious metal designer jewelry and timepieces in the area. Offering an extensive selection and custom designs, Lapeer Gold & Diamond caters to its customers with incomparable customer service.

Owner and President Steve Starking says that he and his staff pride themselves on their attention to detail, as well as their assortment of high-quality jewelry at fair and affordable prices, upholding their devotion to honestly serving the men and women of Lapeer.

“We’re not going to arm wrestle people or try and pressure them into anything,” joked Starking. “We want them to feel comfortable and at home when they’re here. If it’s not right for both parties, for them and for us, then it’s not right at all. We treat our customers the same as we’d treat our own family, because we want to build lasting relationships. I don’t charge someone that comes in to get their watch sized, because I want that person to come back and to tell their friends that we took good care of them. Word of mouth is the best advertising.”

Since opening their doors, Lapeer Gold & Diamond has remained steadfast in providing the community with creative, innovative pieces and custom designs, as well as classic and traditional mainstays. Starking and his seven employees have all received education through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), a gem research institute dedicated to providing corporate and company education in the field of gemology and jewelry arts.

From bridal and wedding rings to earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets and watches, Lapeer Gold & Diamond maintains an elegant inventory from trusted and well-known brands and manufacturers. Also, Starking, the store’s head designer, Jessica Lopez and goldsmith and designer Mark Piechowski work hard to create custom pieces with materials of the highest quality.

Starking says he’s excited to show off the store’s recently updated website, which allows customers to browse through the available selection, as well as design their own pieces virtually in order to get a better idea of what they want from their jewelry. The site features prices, videos and high-resolution images to showcase rich, vivid details and colors.

“We have a good product at a good value, and we’re good people,” said Starking. “I was born in Lapeer and I plan to be working here until I die, and in order to do that, I’m going to be honest and fair to my neighbors.”

Starking is also dedicated to giving back. Among donations to events throughout the year, he and Julie Caris are Kiwanis members.
