Critical Red Cross blood shortage prompts emergency call for donations

LAPEER COUNTY — The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now and help save lives.

Blood donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months, resulting in about 61,000 fewer donations than needed and causing a significant draw down of the Red Cross blood supply. The shortfall is the equivalent of the Red Cross not collecting any blood donations for more than four days.

“It’s crucial that people donate now to meet the needs of patients every day and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of donated blood,” said Todd Kulman of the Great Lakes Michigan Blood Services Region. “Every day, blood and platelet donors can help save lives, and right now these heroes are needed to give as soon as possible.”

The Red Cross has scheduled July blood drives at the following times and locations:

Tuesday, July 11 from 12:30-6:15 p.m. at the North Branch American Legion, 4075 Huron St.;

Wednesday, July 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the Dryden Township Fire Dept., 5532 Main St.

Tuesday, July 18 from 12:30-6:15 p.m. at Brown City Missionary Church, 8935 Burnside Rd.

Monday, July 24 from 2-6:45 p.m. at Hadley Community Church, 3638 Hadley;

Monday, July 24 from 2-6:45 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4139, 128 Daley Rd. in Mayfield Township.
